Design problem

A pressure bed that survives structurally can still fail by surface wear.

The compartmentalised support model reduces shear transmitted into the geology and localises hydraulic failure, but its loaded interfaces remain exposed to prolonged friction, strain and abrasion. A conventional polymeric low-friction coating offers compliance but is ultimately consumable; diamond, graphene and similarly stiff carbon structures offer exceptional local properties but do not by themselves tolerate the required macroscopic deformation and interface stress.

The refinement therefore treats wear as an expected operating process. Longevity comes from replacing the working surface faster than normal service removes it, not from assuming a permanent frictionless coating.

Provisional stack

A permanent root supports a renewable carbon surface.

The candidate interface is a graded stack: structural pressure-cell membrane; thin titanium adhesion layer; titanium-carbide transition region; and a renewable carbon-rich tribological film. Titanium provides a practical bond to the underlying structure while its strong carbide-forming behaviour permits a chemically compatible TiC transition into the carbon-bearing surface.

The TiC region also supplies a hard secondary wear surface if the renewable film is locally lost. Exposure of this layer is a degraded condition and potential diagnostic signature rather than immediate membrane failure.

Regeneration

The hydraulic medium doubles as resurfacing feedstock.

The working fluid may carry dissolved or suspended carbon-bearing precursor material. Electrically addressable cell surfaces then encourage deposition of a carbon-rich film where resurfacing is required. The deposited material need not initially reproduce crystalline diamond: amorphous, diamond-like and graphitic carbon phases can occupy different mechanical roles, with operating pressure and shear potentially modifying the outermost boundary layer.

This mechanism remains deliberately non-specific until a credible fluid chemistry and deposition route are selected. The established design requirement is electrically controlled replenishment from circulating carbon feedstock, not a claim that ordinary aqueous electroplating can deposit diamond.

Material preference

Carbon is favoured provisionally by whole-system consequences.

Layered lubricants and transition-metal compounds may offer superior friction behaviour in particular regimes, but the Station-scale pressure bed makes abundance, cost, recovery and leakage consequences first-order constraints. Carbon is therefore the preferred working candidate: plentiful feedstock, multiple useful solid phases, compatibility with a carbide transition layer and comparatively manageable consequences if carbon-bearing fluid escapes into geological or hydrological volumes.

Particulate carbon is not assumed biologically harmless in every form. Fine-particle exposure, fluid additives and precursor toxicity remain unresolved safety questions. The preference is comparative and architectural, not a blanket toxicological claim.

Autonomous condition monitoring

The resurfacing circuit may also report coating state.

Because the carbon film, carbide transition and underlying conductive layers possess different electrical and tribological behaviour, the deposition electrodes may potentially support indirect wear monitoring through resistance, impedance, current response, friction or related measurements. This could allow continuous internal condition assessment without frequent physical access.

Normal operation would maintain the renewable film; accelerated wear could trigger altered flow, pressure or deposition; local TiC exposure would prompt unloading or resurfacing; deeper transition-layer loss would escalate to physical maintenance. Exact sensing methods and thresholds remain open.

Longevity consequence

The objective is longer unattended service, not maintenance elimination.

Combined with honeycomb isolation, a renewable tribological surface increases the number of degradation stages between ordinary wear and structural pressure-cell failure. Individual cells can be unloaded or isolated while neighbouring cells carry load, and routine surface loss can be corrected without opening the geological support structure for inspection.

This distinguishes inspection interval from service interval. Instrumented cells may inspect their own coating state continuously while remaining physically unopened for long periods. Quantitative claims of decades or centuries are intentionally withheld until wear, deposition and fatigue rates are modelled.

Failure behaviour

Regeneration introduces its own failure modes.

Potential failures include uneven deposition, loss of adhesion, electrically isolated patches, excessive graphitic or brittle growth, precursor depletion, conductive sludge, clogged recovery paths, shorting across deposits and contamination by wear debris. A failed resurfacing system should therefore degrade toward TiC-backed mechanical operation rather than making continued hydraulic support immediately dependent on active deposition.

Provenance boundary

This record preserves the candidate architecture without prematurely fixing its chemistry.

The originating discussion compared polymers, diamond, graphene, diamond-like carbon, transition-metal lubricants and carbide-forming underlayers before converging on the titanium / TiC / renewable-carbon arrangement. That design evolution belongs in 400 if separately accessioned. Real tribology, DLC, carbide-interface and electrochemical carbon-deposition literature belongs in 700. This record remains a provisional refinement of 600.20:40:02 for consideration in the general Station structure.
