A solid geological foundation solved support while creating a shear problem.
The inner rim had already converged on genuine landscape-scale geology carried by a rotating engineered structure. Treating that geological mass as simply resting on, or being rigidly fixed to, a solid underplate appeared mechanically straightforward but made differential movement consequential: settlement, thermal change and geological displacement would couple directly into the rotating primary structure as shear.
The pressure bed originated as an answer to mechanical decoupling, not as a way to imitate natural plate tectonics.
The geological layer was separated from the underplate by a highly pressurised fluid bed.
The proposed change inserted distributed pressurised support between the structural rim and the inner-rim geology. The landscape would effectively ride on a maintained pressure field. The concept was accepted as a strong architectural direction because the Station has an unusually favourable resource for such an inefficient system: immense available energy. Continuous pumping and recovery could therefore be preferred over a mechanically harsher passive foundation.
The design improved when perfect flotation was rejected.
A subsequent question was how much structural failure the system could tolerate. Requiring uninterrupted separation would make any local pressure loss immediately critical. The working interpretation instead allowed pockets of geology to settle into direct contact with the underlying rim while neighbouring pressure volumes continued to carry load. Direct contact therefore became a degraded state with increased shear, not an automatic terminal condition.
This was an important change in reasoning: the support system ceased to be a binary bearing and became another Station mechanism designed to fail progressively.
The support proposal unexpectedly explained several existing Station features.
Pressure loss naturally produced subsidence and seismic events, including unplanned valleys, caldera-like depressions and sufficiently severe sinkholes capable of approaching engineered rim volumes. Controlled pressure redistribution also made limited deliberate seismic movement conceivable when releasing geological stress was safer than preserving exact terrain position.
The same architecture supplied a plausible origin for large subsurface reservoirs: working fluid, leakage, recovery systems and abandoned pressure volumes could all leave immense bodies of liquid beneath the inhabited surface. These consequences strengthened the proposal because they connected previously separate geological imagery to one infrastructure mechanism.
The architectural principle survived; the engineering solution remains incomplete.
Established: geological support should tolerate differential movement rather than rigidly transmit all of it into the rim; distributed pressure support is the present working architecture; local loss of support may degrade into contact and subsidence.
Working/speculative: deliberate pressure-induced seismic adjustment, the extent to which underground lakes derive from support-fluid systems, and the practical degree of direct-contact tolerance.
Superseded: the implicit assumption that the complete geological layer can simply sit on a uniformly solid foundation without consequential shear management.
Open: pressure medium, pressure, cell scale, pumping topology, reservoir layout, leakage control, interface materials, maximum contact area and quantitative load transfer.
The mechanism, its history and its evidence remain separate objects.
The present engineering conclusion belongs in 600.20:40:01. Future hydraulic-bearing, hydrostatic-support, geotechnical or fault-tolerance sources used to test it belong in 700. Tribunal-era drawings, maintenance manuals or incident reports represented as in-universe artefacts belong in 100. This record exists to preserve why the pressure-bed model appeared and which assumptions it replaced.
